You may think that the use of enemas is a fairly modern practice. In reality, however, this practice has been used for centuries to alleviate digestive ailments. During the seventeenth century an enema was called a clyster at which time they were given using a syringe composed of a rectal nozzle and a plunger. By the nineteenth century, the clyster syringe had been improved on and was replaced by a bag that connected to a soft rubber enema bulb.
